“Because the Physicians at Aspen Women’s Center care about the quality of their patient’s deliveries and are very concerned about the welfare and health of your unborn child, we will not participate in a “Birth Contract”, a Doulah Assisted, or a Bradley Method delivery. For those patients who are interested in such methods, please notify the nurse so we many arrange transfer of your care.”
To read more on the discussion:
- Dou-la-la in Signs, Signs, everywhere there's signs asks what's next--forbidding women to look at certain websites, books, or movies?
- Radical Doula wrote about Signs you don't want to see at your ob-gyn's office
- Organic Birth asks What's next?
- Bellies and Babies commented on this in Posted Refusal and Black Lists, and corresponded with a CNM who uses one of the clinic's doctors for their backup physician. This midwife explained that the sign isn't quite as bad as it seems.
This sucks! Why would they actively discourage these? Just for the convenience of the doctor? Even the birth plan?! How could that possibly not be in the best interest of the mother and child?

ugh I know! Definitely not in the best interest of the mother and child. And even if I walked in completely naive (first time pregnancy, not knowing what doula meant, etc) and read this sign not allowing Birth contracts I would worry a bit about my rights and comfort at this particular doctors office.
